A smaller firm is more personalized and more responsive, which allows the decision-making process to be streamlined, reducing delays. The person you deal with is the decision-maker, the person that calls the shots. People enjoy working with folks on a personal level that’s part of what smaller firms have to offer. However, at Su CASA Enterprises, we still need to be aware of the service aspect of our initiatives along with emerging information technology and not allow ourselves to become self-satisfied in an industry that is constantly changing. The continued boom of the home and business technology market along with the vast resources of information available in most reassuring.

As with any large concept, it is always important to start small and pace your growth. We believe that how we differentiate ourselves from the other technology ventures is what will set us apart in the industry as well as determine our success in what we want to accomplish. Aligning ourselves with several initiatives afford us flexibility in setting priorities, allows us opportunities to change as technology changes, enhances our ability to forge relationships, and expand our ability to attract a select group of partnership expertise --- all designed to deliver better solutions.

Because we are not a manufacturer, we are not in the business of promoting a particular component or product. As a matter of fact, this is what sets us apart from the other technology ventures. Su CASA Enterprise is about combining a number of technology products and building them into an infrastructure solution. Where information and technology become wisdom, Su CASA Enterprise is about empowering homes and businesses with solutions. We like to think of ourselves as a facilitator towards building stronger and smarter communities.

At Su CASA Enterprise, we recognize that it will take hard work, dedication, proper asset and inventory control, and a well-positioned partnership and promotion program to be successful. The key to success will be our core initiatives, technical expert advisors and a spectra of business and community support. Effective agreements have benefits for everyone. These agreements must be accompanied by commitments from all participants to reduce barriers in how technology can be used in homes and businesses, increase access and portability of information technology, and help build a smarter community. Su CASA Enterprise has a highly focused multi-dimensional plan to attract our partners and develop our customer base quickly. With a firm belief that our value-based solutions makes better sense and is a responsible philosophy, SU CASA Enterprise is a step in the right direction

Our Values

Mission Statement for Su CASA Enterprise

The mission for Su CASA Enterprise is to become recognized as a leader in the state-of-the-art solution-based information technology for homes and business with special focus towards community wide networks.

Strategic Vision - Su CASA Enterprise

Implementation of the Strategic Vision incorporates the following themes: (I) establishing the right mix of technical and operations support relationships, (ii) leveraging vendor and community relationships, (iii) implementing solutions that enable Su CASA Enterprise to foster ongoing sales and support, (iv) ensuring solutions that are cost effective, and (v) developing measures for performance and outcomes that will be used as catalysts for change.

Company Summary

Su CASA Enterprise is a new company, which will address the current needs of information technology for the business and residential community. Su CASA Enterprise recognizes that effective use of information technology is vital to its future. It will position itself to offer value-added solutions. Su CASA Enterprise will create a world class valued community partner that will help deliver better technology solutions for home users and business in a cost efficient manner. The ability to leverage partnerships with current manufacturers will be a driving force in providing effective solutions targeted for businesses and homes alike.

All initiatives described under the umbrella of Su CASA Enterprise are intended to be their own entity, each with specific goals and objectives, outcome measurements, income and expense projections, planning and implementation stages. Su CASA Enterprise will be in charge of overseeing each entity, is to review changes and new developments in the technology industry, and determine which entity will incorporate any new developments.

Philosophy on Products and Services

We acknowledge the fact that there is a common need for creating affordable technology solutions. Most important we understand that the right strategic partners for technology is the key to successful delivery. We are not in the business of selling products that are already being sold. We are in the business of selling solutions. Our solutions will incorporate a broad range of components, infrastructure, and integration items so that integration is a primary focus and cost efficiency a priority.

Each entity of Su CASA Enterprise can accomplish this by ensuring that all components use standard communication protocols so that integration is made easy and simple. Cost efficiency will carry an emphasis on ensuring that all investments made over time are protected, and new features are easy to add on. Particular attention will be directed at features duplicated across components. Considerable effort will be directed at eliminating duplicated cost that usually occur when features are duplicated. The value added will always incorporate the right components with the right features, for a total solution.

Product partners for components can include, but are not limited to: computers, cabling and switches for whole-house and office management, routers, firewalls, web-hosting, email services, community-based servers, video-surveillance and access control, enterprise-wide networks, and web-compliant applications.

It is not intended for Su CASA Enterprise to store large inventories of these products, but rather to negotiate with product vendors and leverage the appropriate resources to bring the right solution for home and business needs.

Our History

My Story

The birth of Su CASA Enterprises is an interesting story evolving from the frustrating realization that most families do not have access to any technology of any sort. While building a new home in early 1992, we became disillusioned by what we considered to be a gross oversight with such a simple solution. Deploy technology as an appliance so affordability can be easily addressed. The most obvious advantages to have technology as part of a home (or business) appliance is to own a home or business that is prepared and capable of meeting and growing with the ever-changing demands that are postures for success. The growing demand for high-speed DSL and Cable Modem Internet access, home networking of computers, multiple phone lines, home security services, home theaters, multiplayer gaming and digital satellites make technology in a home or office today not an option but a necessity. In fact, a home or office built today without any technology components is considered obsolete before the consumer moves in. With technololgy solutions in place, the possibilities are endless. Including computers, printers, scanners, applications and softwares, and even networks as appliances allows consumers to accomplish almost anything like, internet access, shared printers & software, multiplayer gaming from separate rooms, and yes, audio and video distribution from a single source, inside and outside TV based security monitoring and even automation and control of lights, temperature and electricity as well as home health monitors. The possibilities are endless. The technology is available today. Today is when comsumers can plan, design, architect, and build envorioments for the future. Su CASA Enterprises and a host of valued technology partners is a step in the right direction.

Our Leadership

Management Summary

Su CASA Enterprises was started with one qualified and experienced employee. Since its introduction to the home monitoring segment, Su Salud en Su CASA has been aggressively pursuing its new line of home monitoring products, and plans to quickly emerge as a premier integrator of home health monitoring technologies.

Project Background

This project is intended to address the current needs of information technology and research ways to improve on value and performance through economic impacts, technology interaction, and health monitoring approaches with deployment of technology as a utility.

This project will focus on home health monitoring functions, determine and describe health monitoring and the seamless integration, and detail a definition of required management utilities to include wireless, media, environmental, and security. Research objectives include the following:

· Development of a public shareware database to manage and track health information including but not necessarily limited to cholesterol, glucose, blood pressure, body mass index and weight, nutritional assessment and will be required to feed into standard application suites for presentation and interpretation.

· Posture solutions for inclusion onto comprehensive information technology servers to enhance health monitoring functions by expanding the availability of technology beyond traditional methods and offering solutions in the form of utilities.

The results of this project are intended to demonstrate that better technology solutions for improved health monitoring functions need to be leveraged in a cost efficient approach and remains as the prominent driving force to provide effective solutions that are both practical and affordable. The ability to bring configured networks, tracking of routine health status indicators, and wireless utilities adds a dimension of monitoring intelligence that most consumers have never had in the past.

Part I: Identification and Significance of the Innovation

With some 76 million Americans born between 1946 and 1964 heading toward retirement, emerging technologies likely will help care for this aging baby-boomer generation. Technology is already being used to help keep tens of millions of older people in assisted living situations a lot safer. The National Association for Home Care in Washington, D.C., conducted several clinical trials of distance monitoring of blood glucose levels by computer and found improved outcomes in diabetes care.[1] Similarly, trials of distance monitoring of blood pressures showed enhanced efficiency. Focus of this project will target the development of a shareware database management system to integrate devices for glucose, cholesterol, blood pressure and heart rate already available over the counter at most distribution centers and pharmacies. Consideration will be to evaluate the respective management of information strategies, transfer and archiving of data for longitudinal presentation and interpretation.

As long as homeowners view technology as a necessity, we must all search for ways to support technology devices proliferating here, there, everywhere. Many consumers no longer ask if they should smart wire their homes but are left with what to do with it after its done. Yet, no home or office today has been able to advise consumers on all the various pieces that make up the technology enterprise.[2] Because technology is quickly becoming a specialty, it is vitally important that criteria standards are in place for the seamless integration of future technologies. Monitoring health care functions and the targeted solutions need to be carefully crafted with the ability to be postured as a utility, and that every consumer can take charge and break away from the status quo with regards to proliferation of technology. To do this a community-wide network configured in a ‘server’ environment to centrally support health monitoring is proposed. Standardization is equally paramount to illustrate that such a server can be configured in ways to accommodate many of the current management functions and technologies, ensure security, disaster recovery, wired and wireless protocols, bandwidth management and truly bring intelligence for consumers and into the mainstream market.

Accordingly, there is no other choice but to evaluate the best and carefully crafted solutions for consumers. While not every consumers needs to have a computer, technology can help provide hidden functions for the passive consumer. Clearly, today both active and passive consumers are left with finding their own way of managing all the proliferation of health monitoring technology.

The time to act is clearly now. The intelligent home is perched on the edge of rapid growth, in much the same place personal computers were before they took off and became common consumer purchases.3,4,5 What needs to be in place to drive that serious growth? Most obvious are mass-market prices that bring the technology within the range of more homeowners. Those prices will be driven by both standardized, secured server appliances and multiple uses of the technology to make the purchase more compelling. For instance, a single system that supports home health monitoring. security, entertainment and computer connectivity is naturally far more appealing to the cost-conscious mid-tier buyer than separate systems for all three functions.

We are in a period of transition that yearns to be molded into a period of progress. Tools need to move beyond pilot programs that allow self monitoring and make the most sense when impacting the level of cost for care requiring nurse or physician attention, creating opportunities for intervention, and empowering people to take ownership of their health status. This project will bring the critical mass of experience that makes adopting these tools a strategic necessity – the new home utility.

Part 2: Phase I Objectives

Medical devices, products and technologies are converging to revolutionize home- and self-care health systems in the United States, making it possible for people to play a greater role in maintaining their own health. These systems are geared toward a prevention-oriented, consumer-driven model for health care that includes innovations such as "smart devices" that can "think" for themselves, customized wearable devices, and wireless Internet-linked systems--all expected to deliver convenient, user-friendly, intelligent health care in the home.

For consumers, this could mean convenience in time and travel and reduced health-care costs, and--it is hoped--result in home-care systems that teach people to monitor themselves with gizmos that give timely warnings of illness so that they can turn to their physicians early--when intervention will do the most good. For doctors, it could mean more efficient--and effective--health care driven by patients who take greater responsibility for their own health.

OBJECTIVE 1: is to develop a state-of-the-art shareware database to manage and track all home health information including but not necessarily limited to cholesterol, glucose, blood pressure, body mass index and weight, nutritional assessment and will be required to feed into standard application suites for presentation and interpretation.

Part 3: RESEARCH PLAN

Inititial inquiry seems to illustrate there is no one manufacturer that provides home health monitoring technologies to track Glucose, Blood Pressure and Heart Rate, and Cholesterol in a single comprehensive integrated system.6 In order to evaluate the integration features of the various monitors from different manufacturers, it is expected that these monitors will need to be acquired for the purpose of developing interfaces for the passing of data read-outs to a centralized workstation or server. Some monitors may have integration features with other proprietary knowledge –based systems. The value of any existing reporting and interpretation functions will need to be described and documented with regards to integration with other home monitors (ie. Glucose with Cholesterol, Blood Pressure, and Heart Rate).

The best model for monitoring glucose, cholesterol, and blood pressure is the expected outcome of this evaluation. Factored into the evaluation criteria will be cost of each monitor, robust functions, ease of integration, durability and cost for supplies, and other quality assurance requirements that address security, integrity of data read-out and accuracy, Each device will be evaluated for compliance with data transfer functions in both a wired and wireless mode.

Testing an integrated system for glucose, cholesterol, and blood pressure is required. It is anticipated that realistic imaginary data can suffice for the testing and development of interfaces for this model without having to rely on real client or patient data. All devices will be required to capture no less than 5 read-outs with a maximum of 200. Data is to be transferred to a centralized database and review for accuracy, integrity, and duplicate data.

Migration to whole home health integration and monitoring will occur gradually in three stages. The technology delivery model of the future is envisioned to be predominantly home based in which home health monitoring technologies are provided in a manner that is convenient for the consumer --regardless of location within the home.

MAJOR GOALS & OBJECTIVES

· Develop an automatic tracking and trend collection of information to interpret and report health status indicators including but not limited to Glucose, Blood Pressure and Heart Rate, Cholesterol both HDL and LDL and triglycerides.

CURRENT STATUS

· Identification of top 5 manufactures of home health monitoring technologies.
· Preliminary research indicates there is no one manufacturer that provides home health monitoring technologies to track Glucose, Blood Pressure and Heart Rate, and Cholesterol in a single comprehensive integrated system.
· Database to track Glucose, Blood Pressure and Heart Rate has been completed.
· Macro integration from tracking databases into standard home office suites such as EXCEL for reporting and graphing is completed.

SPECIFIC ACTIONS & TASKS

· Acquire monitoring technologies from at least 5 manufacturers for the purpose of determining the feasibility of data transfers from device to workstation. Outline each manufacturer protocol for data transfer, number of storage readings, cost for equipment and supplies.
· Explore the use of knowledge based systems including, but not limited to: the Internet, digitized libraries, to complement a tracking and assessment management system.
· Enhance system in development for the inclusion of Cholesterol (HDL&LDL) and triglycerides tracking and interpretation.
· Determine the best model for cocktail of monitors based on price, integration features, robust functions, and test each modality for tracking, reporting and interpreting multiple test results.
· Establish a portfolio business case for self monitoring and reporting vs. multiple lab tests and physician visits for interpretation of glucose, cholesteral, and blood pressure readings.
· Develop interface criteria for integrity, accuracy, update protocol and accommodation of wireless transmission

REFERENCES
[1] “Advanced Technologies to Lower Health Care Costs and Improve Quality”, Authored by Erica Drazen, ScD and Keith MacDonald, Massachusettes Technology Collaborative, October 2003 http://www.fcg.com/health-plans/news.asp
[2] “Smart Home Networks: The Fight for Control” ,In-Stat, (Report # IN020244RC), 2002. http://www.instat.com
3 “The Coming Explosion of Fiber to the Home”, by Derek Johnson, Chairman of the Communications and Education Committee - Fiber to the Home Council, 9/15/2003
4 “Home Net Installation Market Big Business: Call in the Pros” by Toni Kistner, Network World, August 26,2002.
5 “Digital Domicile 2003: Home Networking Goes Hollywood” by In-Stat, (Report # IN0301096RC), 2002. http://www.instat.com
6 “Table of Home Health Monitors, Manufacturers with Integration Features” by Charles Cortez, Currently in Development at Su CASA Communications, April 17, 2005.

CONCLUSIONS

Keeping health care at home
Developments of all components of the Su Salud en Su CASA Home Health Monitoring Program and services are intended to provide you with the best of both worlds: the comfort and independence of staying at home, and the security of daily monitoring and proper medical attention.

Monitoring System Overview
Su Salud en Su CASA monitoring system is intended to connect — in-home patients and their monitoring units, senior living residents using multi-user monitoring units and assessment care nurses in the field; with healthcare professionals regardless of location.

Standard over the counter patient monitoring units regardless of manufacturer are required to record your heatlh measurement. All measurements as then called into an IVR telephone system with intuitive software to execute appropriate alerts, record and log measurements in chart ready formats, transmit all assessments and measurements to designated health care provider(s).

How the system works.
A patient using over the counter medical devices take their health measurements daily such as: weight, blood pressure, glucose, and cholesterol lipid panels. After completeing the assessment, the patient simply calls the health assessment phone number and after proper pin identification, the patient responds to a series of assessment questions regarding the measurement to be reported. When the patient responds to s series of verification questions, the patient simply hangs up the phone and the monitoring session results are encypted, compressed and sent to the central repository, and the database is updated with the results.

Once updated, built in interpretative functions evaluate the readings according to urgency and prepares the appropriate alerts and routed via fax, email, along with phone notification to the designated care givers, assisted living personnel and family members. After reviewing the data the clinician can then follow-up with a revised treatment plan with the patient.

Our Unique Technology
Software developers have traditionally developed software for use within an industry segment with only a superficial understanding of that industry. This approach has relied upon the principle that one solution fits all and the end user simply needs to adapt their daily practices to the developed software application. This approach does not work within the healthcare community, specifically as it applies to Telemedicine/Telehealth programs. Healthcare professionals have developed unique procedures, processes and protocols that are specific to their specialty and organizational structure. They expect and deserve technology solutions, including hardware and software that can adapt to their specific requirements, while supporting the delivery of quality healthcare without disruption to their current workflow process.

Su Salud en Su CASA uses a unique approach to software development that recognizes the need for solutions that can be easily adapted and rapidly deployed. Su Salud en Su CASA's integration platform employs a revolutionary and cost effective method of developing software applications that meet the specific needs and compliment and enhance the established workflow process. The Su Salud en Su CASA approach begins by asking the question: "What is your need and your workflow process," then develop with confidence a low-cost effective solution that is integrated with the established workflow process, thus eliminating extensive implementation and training programs.

Home Health Monitoring
When you have heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol, it can be stressful not knowing how stable your health is on a daily ongoing basis.

There are a multitude of over the counter health status diagnostic monitors available to the public varying in price and complexity. What many do not realize that it does not take the most sophisticated monitor to be effective in tracking health status. In fact many do not know how easy it can be to take advantage of the most simplified and least expensive monitors available today.

A variety of over the counter monitors are available to help monitor your vital signs, symptoms including levels of gluscose, choleswterol, hypertension, and medication use every day. SCC must continue to evaluate current markets for whole house and office management and data network solutions, prices for systems and what can be included in package offerings. See Accomplishments

After review of our accomplishments, we can all agree that they are extensive and technical in nature and serves as a solid foundation to pull together any researched objective and with the right combination of technology components put forth a solution to address a specific consumer concern. As it relates to businesses, it has also been a long standing commitment to provide added services related to strategic planning and guidance in order to maximize return on investment opportunities when proposing solutions for operational efficiencies. To complement our list of accomplishments, perhaps it is best to highlight a categorical review of our diverse areas of expertise and projects managed over the years. Consulting services have been a major focus for Su CASA Communications that include but not limited to:

Database Management

With our extensive experience in development of business applications including data entry, edits, and report generation, we have developed a strong foundation with relational databases and stored procedures. This has allowed us to manage inventories to address user needs, support special projects and when necessary design for custom needs. A preview of this strong knowledge of logical and physical database designs, application programming and report writing include:

o Wrote software for Materials Management , Inventory Control and Asset Management, and Change Management for problem resolution.

o Developed and implemented Client Assessment Tracking for project CAPABLE, a senior citizens' activity center funded by Sisters of Charity. This included tracking glucose and blood pressure assessments.

o Developed and implemented mailing list management system for The Mental Health Association, a United Way Agency

Network Management

By the time Su CASA Communications was started, the original founder was providing consulting services regarding PC-based network management way before NOVELL and MICROSOFT servers were born. We can truly claim that in Houston, Texas we were one of the few sites with full-blown PC-based networks in place. Our two sites were the Mental Health Association and the Harris County Hospital District. Since the early 1980’s when this development occurred, network management has experienced extensive growth. We have been fortunate to acquire (along this growth) our extensive design of Novell and NT and Windows2000-2003 Application Servers for small (20 nodes) and large (2000 nodes) enterprise systems. Our emphasis for these technologies has always been deeply rooted towards a broad end user support with MS Office application sets and many other network compliant tool sets available. This has included the development of Materials Management, mailing list systems, and Client Assessment Tracking systems in a multi-user environment. The combined over 20 years of Novell management, NT Servers coupled with a strong TCP/IP design, we have been able to effectively :

· Design, develop and implement enterprise networks for small, medium, and large organizations exemplifying centralization of application deployment for all user productivities. Over the years these include The Mental Health Association (25 nodes), Chicano Health Manpower (20 nodes), MD Anderson Hospital (30 nodes), Northeast Medical Center Hospital (250 nodes), Harris County Hospital District (3000 nodes), Shalom Center Inc. (20 nodes), and Dominion Home Health (25 nodes).

· Design, develop, and direct and oversee the management of technical support needs for administrative databases, network systems and multiple operating systems on server technologies.

· Trouble shoot of software issues, connectivity efficiencies, and server faults

Business IT Consultant
In many respects, our technical skill sets rank on the certification levels for software and network design. This has been particularly acute when all networks and applications tools have been developed on schedule, with in budgets, and sustained over prolonged periods of time at a predictable cost. This type of outcome has always been complemented by a strong strategic component that has allowed us to develop an extensive business consulting arm to accomplish the following:

· Designed, developed and deployed a turnkey voice mail system, design and deployment of system requirements for Harris County Hospital District (1997), and Shalom Center, Inc. (2004)

· Developed business plans for Northeast Medical Center (1992), Harris County Hospital District (1996), Y&E Enterprise (1999), TC International (2000), Dominion Home Health (2003), and Shalom Center, Inc. (2004)

· Developed relationships with oil & gas, customer service, education and health care executives for the purpose of ensuring appropriate levels of staffing resources for change management and technology deployments on behalf of Robert Half Technology, Inc. (RHI) (2005)

· Foster positive attitudes towards outsourcing and contract assignments for the purpose of achieving cost efficiencies and cost containment for RHI (2005)

· Facilitate introduction and infiltration of services in markets and industries not yet negotiated (2005).

· Developed Strategic Information Technology Plans consistent with business and financial goals for the Harris County Hospital District (1992-1999). These plans included but were not limited to

Ø Negotiated outsourcing and facilities management contracts.

Ø Directed and oversaw implementation of an enterprise-wide patient care information network meeting budgetary expectations.

Ø Directed and oversaw the management of technical support needs for administrative databases, network systems and multiple operating systems on servers and 2500 desktops

Ø Created and managed departmental and capital budgets for information technology, telecommunication, and security

Ø Acquired necessary hardware and software systems to meet user needs and evaluated new technologies for future implementation

Private Access and Business Linked Offices

Private Access and Business Linked Offices (PABLO) configures and provides affordable options for infrastructure including optical wiring, high speed switches, network server technology, desktop options, wireless, unified and anywhere access options that represent the best value to businesses. A full range of server technology is offered to select communities. This includes expanding the availability of technology beyond traditional methods by offering solutions to offices, schools, churches, apartment complexes, high-rises, mobile homes, planned communities and residential developments.

Although there currently no projects scheduled for this initiative, a tremendous amount of time and resources has been spent researching the practicality of this initiative. All possible solutions to address this directive have demonstrated to be cost prohibitive to both consumers and developers of communities. Technological advances in the wireless approaches both in the home and urban settings (with deployment of Wi-Fi) continue to impact delivery approaches for this initiative as well.

It has always been our commitment that the concept of server technologies in communities would only be cost effective if proposed within a community project where cost can be shared as a utility cost. Yet, a perceived value has always been expressed by developers in several communities regarding providing these services as a utility. And although additional research may be required, resources continue to be an issue in developing projects for this initiative. We continue our search for opportunities to provide project support in the event a community developer takes a proactive approach to providing servers as a utility.

Community Based Services

This Initiative is currently under development and will be published as soon as it is completed. It was incredible,"
Cortez said. Cortez might be well-known on the local scene, but way back in college he was only
trying to get the bills paid while attending a costly Ivy League school when he started
playing for pay.

Launching a career As an undergraduate at the University of Pennsylvania, Cortez bought a guitar and tapped a natural aptitude for music in his first semester at college. He started at one restaurant with a few songs, and as his play list expanded, he brought more eateries into the fold.

"It was pretty expensive (college) and I had to do something quick when I got that first tuition bill. In retrospect, I don't know why I didn't get a real job but I picked up the guitar. I had tinkered with it as a child, but had never really played. I taught myself two songs and that was it," Cortez said.

The then 24-year-old didn't know it, but he was embarking on a path that would lead him to a lifetime of playing and singing. Cortez said he has also been toying with the idea of trying to record an album.

Leading to love
If the years of warbling has helped Cortez keep his musical ambitions afloat, it was also the conduit for helping him meet his wife. Peggy Cortez, a Pennsylvania native, married Cortez after meeting him because her mother was one of his regular listeners. The older woman and the young singer struck up a friendship, and the woman was impressed enough to prod her daughter to come meet him.

"She came home and said, 'You have to meet this young man who sings. He's just amazing,' " Peggy Cortez said.

The crowd Cortez plays to these days is primarily at Rico's, where he is stationed at the front of a busy dining area. Cortez likes the fact the restaurant is close to his home in The Woodlands, and he can duck out by 10 p.m. most nights instead of staying up into the wee hours playing for the beer crowd as he has done at places in the past.

"People go there to unwind and relax in a family-oriented atmosphere and I can get home early," he said. Cortez, who strums the guitar and sings, delivers a mix of material that includes rock 'n' roll, ballads, folk and Tejano songs and rhythm and blues. He'll also do his best to
accommodate requests for children's songs.

Performance time
His performances carry a host of crowdpleasing tactics, including fielding requests, injecting into the act bits of trivia about songs or the artists who performed them and offering free drinks for the first patron who can name the performer or title of some often obscure or nostalgic song.

"They love getting the chance to participate. They all recognize the iconic songs out there," Cortez said. With hundreds of songs stored in his mental jukebox, he's come a long way from
the scared college kid facing audiences with Morris Albert's "Feelings" and one other
song he can't recall all the only tunes in his arsenal.

Today, Cortez performs a range of songs in Spanish and English. He's taken requests he doesn't know how to do, and learned the songs for the next night. He's also cheated his way through an unfamiliar song with lyrics scribbled on a table napkin.

"I've developed what I think is a good ear. I can pick up a song pretty quick. People request a lot of things, and many of them I don't know," he said.

Raising a family
Cortez moved to Houston right after he finished school in Pennsylvania, to pursue a master's degree at University of Texas School of Public Health in the Texas Medical Center. Over the years, between health care work and family duties raising two children - 17-year-old daughter Joelle and 6-yearold son Pablo - Cortez has tried to stay sharp playing gigs here and there at restaurants, country clubs or corporate affairs.

Along the way, he taught himself some piano and is trying to learn the keyboards, so he can expand his performances and the type of venues he plays. The music isn't his main source of income, only a source of fulfillment.

"It's rewarding, the interaction. Especially little kids. They come up and they're in awe. Several months back, four little girls about 5 years old came with their stationery and asked me to autograph it. It was hilarious. That makes it all worthwhile," Cortez said.

Spreading music
Besides restaurants, weddings and birthday bashes, Cortez said he uses his music to
volunteer for children's programs or for the sick and elderly. He also plays and sings in
several choirs at his church, St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, a circumstance that
makes him feel as though in some small way he's thanking God for the musical talent he's been given. "That's been another element of my inspiration. If you think of Christian music, it's just beautiful," he said.

Peggy Cortez said her husband's performing has enabled them to meet superstars such as Luther Vandross and band members for Diana Ross, and made friends for the couple, too.
"A community sort of develops wherever he sings. And we get to tap into that. We meet so many people," she said.

charlie.bier@chron.com",

. Fast fact: Began playing.the guitar and singing as a means to pay for college
. Quick-quote: "I've never had a guitar lesson or a voice lesson."
